LETHBRIDGE:  A 32-year-old city man is charged with assault with a weapon in connection with an incident last week where another man was pepper sprayed.

Last Thursday (June 30th) morning, between 12:20 a.m. and 2:58 a.m. police responded to a total of four assault reports involving male victims who were sprayed in the face with pepper spray.

Two of the incidents occurred near the 300 block of Stafford Drive North, one near the 400 block of 5 Street South and the other in the alley along the 200 block of 1 Avenue South.

In three of the cases, the victims were confronted by a group of men who were unknown to them and in the fourth case the victim was confronted and assaulted by a male subject who was known to him. In all cases the subjects fled the area before police arrived  and despite efforts to find them, were not located.

None of the victims was seriously injured.

Further investigation resulted in a suspect being identified and charged in connection with one of the pepper spray incidents. The other three assaults remain under investigation as there is insufficient evidence to lay additional charges at this time.

Barry Joel Soosay, is charged with one count of assault with a weapon and breach of probation.

Soosay was released from custody by a Justice of the Peace with conditions including a daily curfew and prohibitions from having any contact with the victim, possessing any weapons or attending the downtown core.
