Stress on Fish Populations Prompts Advisory for Alberta Anglers
SOUTHWEST ALBERTA – Anglers are advised to take some extra precautions when it comes to catch-and-release over the next while.
Alberta Environment and Parks says zones ES1, ES2 and ES3, in particular, along the Eastern Slopes are experiencing low river flows and consistently high temperatures. Those conditions can put a significant amount of stress on fish populations.
Anglers in those areas are encouraged to fish in stocked ponds, start trips earlier in the morning and release fish as quickly and safely as possible to minimize handling time.
Alberta Environment and Parks staff will continue to monitor stream conditions, and may have to implement restrictions, if necessary, to reduce fish mortality. They’re also working on a comprehensive plan to manage any other angling-related risks.
