Public Info Session for Wednesday on New Downtown Parking Technology

LETHRBIDGE: New technology to replace downtown parking metres is up for discussion again, at a public engagement session Wednesday afternoon.

The entire downtown area is part of the parking technology upgrade project, including  areas that are just time restricted (meaning areas that currently don’t have parking metres but have signs indicating parking time limits). The $2 Million parking technology upgrades will see pay stations placed in these areas as well.

A public engagement session last December presented a number of technology choices.

Parking Upgrade Project Manager, Val Fellger, says they gathered public opinions at the session, and found residents favoured one option in particular.

“That would be the hybrid option, consisting of  multi-space pay-by-plate machines (MSMs), or pay stations, with licence plate recognition enforcement, and then, at our  barrier-free or accessibility stalls, we would be looking at single space smart metres  (SSSMs).  We’re now coming back to the public to  discuss what the implementation of this new system could look like.”

Fellger says they are looking for feedback on things like zoned areas, for breaking the downtown into time restricted zones that you would have to pay for parking and we are also asking the public for feedback on a couple of options in regard to machine placement, meaning how many machines and they pay stations would be on the street.

At a  feedback session at CASA tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon, the city will ask how residents would like to see implementation of the new system.

For those who are not familiar with pay-by-plate pay stations, the city will have a number of the equipment vendors in attendance says Fellger.

“We’re going to be having six pay-by-plate vendors and their machines there, so community members can try the machines out, play with them, ask questions that they have or their customers and clients have, and get a lot of really good information from the pay-by-plate vendors.”

Wednesday’s pubic session will be at CASA ( 230 8th street South) from 1:30 to 3:00 and from 3:30 to 6:00, with short presentations.

For those who won’t be able to attend, but are still interested in the project, more information is on the city website
