Food Banks Need Your Help to “Target Hunger”

Jun 10, 2016 | 2:06 PM

LETHBRIDGE:  With fire having ravaged Fort McMurray and the unemployment rate on the rise in Alberta food banks across the province are in need of more help. The situation is compounded by the fact that food bank shelves become depleted as we move into the summer months.

With that in mind, the Lethbridge Food Bank, the Interfaith Food Bank and Coaldale Food Bank are reminding residents about The Annual Target Hunger City Wide Food Drive this Saturday (June 11th).

Most residents will have already received a bright yellow plastic bag, with the words “Target Hunger” across the front.

Residents are asked to fill the bag with the most needed non-perishable items (you will find a list of items printed on the bag) and leave it on your front step before 10-am Saturday morning.   Volunteers will be in your neighbourhood between 10-am and noon to pick up the bags.

Food items collected in Coaldale remain in that town, while items collected in Lethbridge will be shared between the two city food banks.

More than 59,000 pounds of food was collected in Lethbridge during Target Hunger last year and this year’s goal is 100,000 pounds.

In Lethbridge, the effort will help ensure that more than 3000 city residents each month (or about 1400 households) are provided with food.  Almost half of those in need are children.

If by your bag is missed on pickup, or you’ve forgotten to put it out on time, you can drop off your donation at either food bank, or at participating locations in Lethbridge:

— Canada Safeway (Fairmont and West Lethbridge)

— Save On Foods (North and West)

— Sobey’s Uplands

— Real Canadian Superstore & Real Canadian Wholesale Club

— Troy’s No Frills

In Coaldale, if your donation is not picked up on Saturday morning, you can take the bag to the Food Bank at 1716 – 20th Avenue or call 403-345-2720.

If you are one of the volunteers helping with Target Hunger, you can share your experiences on social media using #TargetHunger2016.
