City Begins Updating Westminster Area Redevelopment Plan

Jun 10, 2016 | 11:42 AM

LETHBRIDGE – After nearly 31 years, the Westminster Area Redevelopment Plan is about to get underway once again.

These types of plans are written expressly for mature areas of Lethbridge as a targeted development, that still respects the value and character of the neighborhood. It’ll also set out new policies for the redevelopment of vacant and underutilized parcels of land and buildings.

Community Planner, Mike Wilk, says the City is currently undertaking a neighborhood assessment, which is just the first step of the entire process.

“The old plan was adopted for the Westminster area in 1985. There just hasn’t been too much of a push to get a redevelopment plan done here until recently,” noted Wilk. “That started when the MDP (Municipal Development Plan) was adopted [in 2010], and now we’re finally able to get to it.”

He explained that some resources have also been freed up recently, as the London Road plan wraps up.

Public feedback activities are expected to start this fall, after the City has completed its neighborhood data collection. After the vision is more clearly defined with the public’s help, principles and policies will then be developed during neighborhood workshops.

A draft plan will be shared publicly after all that, and a final draft will be presented to City Council for approval.

While it’s still in the early stages and subject to change, Wilk says the tentative timeline is to adopt the plan by Fall 2017.
