Paving to Re-open 43 Street Late This Summer

LETHBRIDGE – Council agreed on Monday to move ahead with paving and re-opening the remainder of 43 Street South.

The paving stretches from just south Southgate Boulevard, up to just south of Fairmont Gate. (Pictured above, outlined in red)

The project was recently made allowable by the new Southeast Area Structure Plan (SEASP), which was adopted by council on May 16. The SEASP allows for more connectivity with Southgate and Fairmont to the Southeast Area with a grid based roadway system, instead of curvilinear.

Council hopes opening the Southgate Boulevard access to 43 Street will alleviate some traffic flow concerns for residents in the area. The roadway had been closed for three years prior to this decision to manage traffic flow, movement patterns and community expectations while developing the Southgate neighbourhood.

However, it will be a temporary solution until development starts to take place east of 43 Street.

“It could be five to ten years before you see some of these other roads being built, along with other developments in this area. The timing’s really up to the developers in the area,” noted Jeff Greene, Director of Planning and Development.

He added that after that development takes shape, the road will be replaced with new north-south connectors.

As part of council’s resolution, the project is set at a maximum of $450,000, which will be funded from the existing Graveled Roadway Upgrading Project budget.

Construction tenders are expected to be sent out shortly for contractors to review.

Residents in the area immediately affected by the construction will be notified prior, and the roadway should re-open sometime in the late summer or early fall.
