Province announces six task forces on farm safety

May 20, 2016 | 1:33 PM

EDMONTON – Alberta has set up six task forces with 78 people to consult broadly on new farm safety regulations, but adds there is no timeline for completion.

Agriculture Minister Oneil Carlier said he wants to make sure the six committees have the time and flexibility to get things right.

He says the committees will start in June and could finish this year but could also work into next year with regulations not ready until late 2017.

The committees will explore areas such as employment standards, labour relations, and occupational health and safety rules.

The committees were set up after Premier Rachel Notley’s government passed a controversial bill late last year immediately mandating health and safety rules for farms and making workers eligible for workers compensation benefits.

Farmers held mass protests against the bill, saying it could drive farms into bankruptcy with red tape and undermine the family farm culture.
