‘It Was Fast:’ Wildfire Forces More People From Homes In Fort McMurray
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. – – Downtown Fort McMurray is under an evacuation notice as a wildfire whipped by winds is engulfing homes on the outskirts of the northern Alberta community.
The Rural Municipality of Wood Buffalo says people should leave immediately and head for a lodge about 20 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.
Carina Van Heerde, a reporter with Fort McMurray radio station K-A-O-S says residents were ordered to flee several neighbourhoods earlier today and a trailer park that had been evacuated yesterday is on fire. She said the fire was advancing towards a Super-8 motel and a gas station.
Crews had seemed to be making progress controlling the blaze — which has been burning since the weekend — but the situation worsened quickly today. The province is calling in more reinforcements, including 100 more firefighters and a giant helicopter that can dump more than two thousand litres of water at a time
