Lethbridge man sentenced on child porn charges

LETHBRIDGE – A 44-year-old Lethbridge man who was caught with a massive collection of child pornography has received a federal prison sentence.

Robert Rogers pleaded guilty to charges of possessing and accessing child pornography in May at the outset of his trial. He maintained his innocence on a charge of distributing child porn and was subsequently convicted on the charge following the trial.

In total, he had over 57,000 images of child porn and more than 4,300 videos. It was noted by the Crown that 4,129 different children were identified in the material.

Friday morning, Aug. 31, Justice D.K. Miller delivered a sentence of six years – including consecutive prison terms on two of the three charges. He then stated that the term would be reduced to five years under the totality principle (Section 718.2(c), which states that where consecutive sentences are imposed, the combined sentence should not be unduly long or harsh.

“These are truly horrific crimes with long lasting impacts on their victims,” said Justice Miller, while going over his decision.

“This is not a victimless crime,” he then added, saying the children depicted in child pornography are victimized every time someone else views the images or videos.

Rogers was charged in 2016, following an investigation by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT). The Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Storm 3 Operation focused on high-level targets that shared large collections of photos and videos on peer-to-peer networks. Ten men were charged across southern Alberta, including Rogers and John Tulloch, who received 18 months in jail last year.

In addition to time in prison, Rogers will also be added to the sex offender registry for 20 years and will be prohibited from working, volunteering or attending places where children are likely to be present for life.
