Candidates for Lethbridge CAO position narrowed down

LETHBRIDGE – The search for a new CAO for the City of Lethbridge is entering a new phase.

According to Councillor Jeffrey Coffman, who sits on the ad hoc committee formed to determine the selection process last fall, the recruitment firm tasked with choosing potential candidates has narrowed the search from about 130 people, to just 13.

“Odgers Berndtson is the search firm we’re working with and Odgers has been doing an incredible job of targeting candidates, reaching out to candidates, asking known and established people as well if they can recommend people.”

And he says they’ve had interest from across the country.

“We’ve reached a lot of people from coast to coast. And a lot of people have been approached.”

On Monday, April 27, Coffman says they got an updated list of candidates with the demonstrated competence to do the job. The committee has briefly gone through the profiles and during the week of May 7, the list will be shortened to about four.

During the second week of May there will likely be more interviews and will choose two or three to then make presentations to council.

The original timeline to have a candidate selected was mid-April, but Coffman says some of that is because they had so many briefing documents to go through.

“We had some suggestions and changes which bumped dates out a bit, so where we were hoping to have at least an offer out by the beginning of May, we’ve pushed that back a couple of weeks. This really is about getting the best person. So, if it’s going to take a little bit longer, it’s going to take a little bit longer.”

In the meantime, interim City Manager Kathy Hopkins will stay on, on a month-to-month basis and to help the successful new CAO learn the job.

Coffman can’t say at this point whether there are any in-house or local applicants, only that there are those who have an ‘understanding of the community’ who have applied for the position.

The hope is to have someone selected by early June.
