Alberta Auditor General Rips Into Former Provincial Government For Failed School Construction

Apr 13, 2016 | 5:57 AM

EDMONTON: Alberta’s auditor general has delivered a scathing report on school construction under former premier Alison Redford.

Merwan Saher says there were problems from the start when Redford’s government announced more than 100 new schools starting in 2012.

Saher says there was administrative chaos; no one was in charge and no money was set aside for building.

He says cabinet ministers announced new schools with no idea if they would be built by the promised date.

He says bureaucrats couldn’t advise ministers properly because no one had all the information.

Saher recommends clear rules to build schools and urges politicians not to create false hopes by promising things that may not be achievable.
