Construction on Phase 2 of Legacy Park kicks off today

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Anyone in Lethbridge driving by Legacy Park beginning this week will notice that construction on the development of Phase 2 – Legacy Park has started.

The initial construction will consist of creating a second parking lot and driveway beside the original northside lot to provide additional parking for Legacy Park and its future amenities.

City of Lethbridge Parks Manager David Ellis says since we’re moving into spring, they’re getting ready to do some more construction.

Crews will need to use a portion of the existing north parking lot as a staging area for equipment, but as far as what disruptions park users might experience, Ellis is hopeful there won’t be much.

“Obviously construction always closes off an area, so we’ll have to fence off around the site, and there will be a little bit of equipment in the existing parking lot for a little bit,” he continued. “There will be some truck traffic coming in and out, but the disruption to park users should be minimal.”

Park users will continue to have full access to existing park amenities, including the sports courts, outdoor obstacle course, playground and skatepark.

Phase 2 is made up of a couple of projects on top of the new parking lot, so while the end result is now at least in sight for workers, Ellis admits it would be nice to be wrapping up, but they’re just ramping up for the next round of construction.

“This year we’ll finish the parking lot in June, and hopefully get that done before we start building construction because later on in the summer, we’re going to be doing a community pavilion and new picnic shelter construction. Then later in the year we’ll be getting going on the spray park construction, so we’ll get the parking lot done first, and that’ll be a little bit of disruption, but it’ll ease interruption for users later on this summer.”

The second part of Phase 2 construction is the development of a waterfall and ornamental garden, and that work will start in late April in partnership with the Horticulture Society.

The waterfall and ornamental garden are located in the northwest area of the park and will have little impact to park users.
Once all of those pieces are complete, the park itself will be pretty much finished according to Ellis.

“Next year we’ll probably be finishing up some of the big adventure playground construction, and that’ll be it.”

The second parking lot will be critical once they get all of the amenities in the park and all of the features going.

“We anticipate that the spray park will be really popular. The community room will be used and booked by members of the community, so we anticipate that’ll be busy. Once the park kinds of grows in and comes to form it’ll be a tremendously busy park, so we’re anticipating much more parking needs there than we do in some of our other parks and so we’re getting that going now.”

The nice thing about Legacy Park for builders is that it has a lot more land base, so there’s much more room for big facilities.

“On the west side of the park, we have the community stage and the lookout area, which is really designed around big events and performances there. Part of the construction that we’ll be doing this spring will be a connector between the west parking lot and Blackwolf Boulevard, so we’ll be able to move buses and bigger equipment through the park easier to try and avoid that congestion.”

The new parking area will function as a staging area for construction equipment upon its completion and will remain closed during the construction of amenities mentioned.
