Numerous Construction Projects Causing Some Visitor Disruptions at Waterton

Apr 2, 2016 | 11:23 AM

WATERTON – Visitors are being reminded of some spring and summer construction projects that may be causing some disruptions at Waterton Lake National Park.

The earliest closures will be both the Cameron Lake Day Use Area and Akamina Parkway, from April 30th until later into November. Existing facilities and the parking area are being upgraded.

The Lakeshore Trail at Cameron Lake and the parkway will be closed during construction for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. Parks Canada is currently pursuing a complimentary shuttle service for hikers to ensure continued access to trails along Akamina Parkway, which include Carthew-Alderson and Summit Lake.

Red Rock Parkway will close in May for crews doing routine road work and replacing culverts, but it will be open for weekend access. Visitors can access the parkway from Fridays at 2-pm until Sundays at 4-pm. It’ll also be open for the May long weekend, on Friday, May 20 at 2-pm to Monday, May 23 at 4-pm.

The parkway should open back up for full access at 2-pm on June 17, but it may be closed for two to three weeks after the September long weekend to finalize any work that couldn’t be done during the spring. Crandell Mountain Campground will also open May 20.

Other projects that may have a minor impact on visitors include:

Blakiston Falls Viewing Platforms

The platforms at Blakiston Falls will be closed until June, but Parks Canada has yet to confirm a date. The Blakiston Falls trail will also be closed for one week during that time to repair a portion of the path.

During construction, access to Tamarack Trail will be available through Snowshoe Trail. Blakiston Valley Trail will remain open for the remainder of the spring and summer.

Chief Mountain Highway

Road repairs from the north to the south will continue from May 1 to July 31. The highway will remain open during construction, but single lane alternating traffic could cause up to 20 minute delays.

Staff Housing

Construction will begin this month on the 200-block of Clematis Avenue, between the United Church and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, replacing Parks Canada staff accommodations.

Waterton Townsite Infrastructure Replacement

Water and sewer upgrades will continue along Evergreen Avenue, north of Cameron Falls. The street will be closed to the public during that time, but leaseholders will still have access. Visitors will be able to get to Cameron Falls through Fountain Avenue.

Further water and sewer upgrades will force the south end of Waterton Avenue to Vimy Avenue to close until May 20, as well. The G Loop at the Townsite Campground will have to be closed to facilitate the work, and access to the Community Kitchen and picnic areas along the lake, including Cameron Bay, will also be unavailable.

Regular updates, maps of the projects and other information will be provided on the Waterton Lake National Park website.
