Fine and Driving Ban Imposed for Fatal Collision

LETHBRIDGE – A 50-year old woman who admitted to careless driving, for an incident in which a 49-year old cyclist was killed, has been handed a $2,000 fine and three month driving prohibition.

On May 30, 2015, Robyn Wilgosh was travelling east bound on Highway 3 around 10:45-am, when she hit Sherry Handsaeme who was riding her bike on the shoulder with a friend.

EMS pronounced Handsaeme dead on arrival at the scene.

Witnesses stated that the vehicle had been swerving in its lane and onto the shoulder for about 200-yards before hitting the cyclist.

Wilgosh told police that she heard a beep in her car and looked down for just a moment. An investigation by police confirmed there was no activity on her phone leading up to the collision.

Handsaeme’s friend, who had been riding with her that day, read her victim impact statement in court. She stated that she still has flash-backs to that day and suffers from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). She broke into tears, saying that as she was transported from the scene, “I left her there on the highway alone”, calling it a “personal hell”.

While Wilgosh was not willing to speak, her lawyer said she had asked him to apologize to the family, saying she suffers from anxiety from the incident and that she’s extremely remorseful.

The $2,000 fine and three month driving prohibition is the maximum penalty available under the Traffic Safety Act for careless driving.
