Mar 30, 2016 | 10:32 AM

OTTAWA – Steps are being taken towards a by-election in Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner after the passing of MP Jim Hillyer.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada has formally received notice of the vacant seat.

The way the rules are set up, the earliest that the by-election could take place is Monday, May 16th.

Hillyer was found dead in his Ottawa office on March 23rd. Autopsy results confirmed that Hillyer died from a heart attack. However, it’s unclear whether it was caused by a pre-existing heart condition or a side effect of intense chemotherapy. He battled with leukemia in 2003.

A funeral service will take place on Friday at 11:00-am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Centre (2 North – 200 West Street) in Raymond.
