College Trades Programs Receive Significant Support from US Company

LETHBRIDGE – The college announced a partnership that’s the first of its kind in Canada.

Hanlon Ag Centre and AGCO Corporation signed an AGCO Advantage Program agreement with Lethbridge College in January. It will expand Ag and Heavy Equipment apprenticeship and certification programs.

AGCO is the global leader in designing, manufacturing and distributing agricultural equipment. As part of the agreement, the company will provide state-of-the-art technology and training at no cost to the college.

Eight different colleges in the United States have already implemented the program, but Lethbridge will be the first within Canada.

“When I first visited here, one of the first conversations was they showed me their plan for expansion. That really keyed in the back of my mind, and showed me that this is probably where we needed to be,” noted Russell Goertzen, AGCO Advantage Program Manager.

The partnership was first brought forward by Hanlon, which is a local AGCO dealer and long-time partner of Lethbridge College. Since the equipment is already embedded in the program, it’s become an ideal spot for dealers to send their technicians for additional training.

College President, Dr. Paula Burns, says the companies’ support comes as a great advantage for future students, also allowing them to offer all four years of Ag Equipment apprenticeship training.

“The program itself is attracting a lot of attention. I think now we’re finding that Lethbridge has a very stable economy, but it also has lots of people who are looking to make sure that they’re able to diversify, so agriculture is a big part of that.”

The college will also be hosting over 20 AGCO technicians in a separate partnership opportunity, as part of its AGCO Technician Dealer Training program through March and April.
