CALGARY —  As we move closer to the April 16 provincial election, all of Alberta’s political parties are being encouraged to consider issues important to cattle and beef producers.

Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) Chair, Charlie Christie, says grazing leases are among the issues brought forth by the ABP.

“It’s important for the Alberta Government to recognized that grazing leases on Crown land are not only a critical part of the industry for many producers and operations but, a valuable tool, as well, for protecting land, water and biodiversity of our province, to the benefit of all Albertans.”

Christie says they are asking government to committ to long-term, secure, ten-year leases for grazing permits and grazing reserves on all the crown land in Alberta, including the Castle and the Bighorn Country areas.

“In order to reduce the extreme vulnerablility of our sector to adverse transactions, we would ask that they would implement the modernized grazing lease rental rate framework that was developed by and supported strongly by all producers, grazing organizations across the province.”

“We beleive that Crown lands under grazing dispositions should be recognized as effective conservation tools that would contribute to Canada’s Target One goal for conservation and biodiversity under the United Nations Convention on biological diversity.”

He noted it would negate the need for substantional expansion of park areas.

According to Chrisite,Government needs to consult with the cattle and beef industries.

“The government needs to take time to properly consult with stakeholders and consider previous regional planning before implementing plans for the previous Bighorn Country as well.”

“It stands to affect our industry in extreme ways and if we work together we can mitigate those extremes and come to more succesful goals where grazing and biodiversity is concerned, I think.”
