LETHBRIDGE –  More than half a dozen communities including Lethbridge, Pincher Creek and Cardston, will benefit from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

Calgary-Skyview MP Darshan Kang was in Lethbridge to make the announcement on behalf of Federal Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister, Navdeep Bains.

“In the spirit of this visit, I’m pleased to announce the Government of Canada will invest $4,899,327 for projects in celebration of Canada’s 150th year of Confederation.”

$3.5 million dollars of that money will go towards renovating the Genevieve Yates Memorial Theatre as announced by Lethbridge City Council last November.

Lethbridge Mayor Chris Spearman is also pleased that $180,000 will go towards upgrading the Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre at the University of Lethbridge, along with other monies.

“I think recognizing the twinning relationship with Saint-Laurent is wonderful. Certainly the two communities have worked hard on that, so it’s $79,000 between the two communities.”

Pincher Creek Mayor Don Anderberg says $463,000 will also go towards a new park in the town.

“The basic project is a spray park. The secondary project is adding a waterslide to our multi-purpose facility, which is a swimming pool. So with this community money, and this grant, we are able to go ahead with that project.”

The Town of Bow Island will get $109,000 to upgrade its swimming pool, the Town of Cardston gets $250,000 to also upgrade its swimming pool. Granum will see $100,000 to help rehabilitate its recreational facility, Nanton gets $25,500 for the Tom Hornecker Recreation Centre Curling Rink, and the Magrath Curling club will receive more than $32, 500 to renovate its facility.

A total of $46.2 million has been allocated for various project across Western Canada.
