School District Public Meeting Date Set

Mar 8, 2016 | 4:12 PM

LETHBRIDGE – Following a petition from concerned parents that received over 2,000 signatures, Lethbridge School District 51 has scheduled a public meeting for March 23 at Wilson Middle School.

A new six-person committee will be elected at the meeting. The purpose behind it will be to better provide feedback and recommendations on the district’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Policy.

Four public members will be elected, with the remaining two being board-appointed members. Each public nominee will have the chance to address the board before the vote.

While time will be limited, those who aren’t nominated will be able to speak as well.

Once elected, the committee will set its own meetings, and present its recommendations on April 19.

Ultimately, the School Board has the final say on the policy, but will carefully consider all recommendations from the committee put before them. A second and possible final reading will happen at the regular Board meeting on April 26.

Eligible voters, who must be 18 years or old, reside within the city and be a public-school-tax supporter, can register between 6:15 -6:45-pm before the meeting.

However, a process outlined in the School Act does not allow non-residents to cast a ballot.
