Fort Macleod Set to Move Forward After Legal Battle with Mayor
LETHBRIDGE: The town of Fort Macleod will continue moving forward, following a decision from a Court of Queen’s Bench justice last week.
Mayor Rene Gendre was sanctioned by Fort Macleod council in 2014, for making decisions he didn’t have the authority to make and contravening several town policies and bylaws.
Gendre applied to have the sanctions removed, but after the application was denied, he was ordered to reimburse the town for about $12,000 in legal fees. Should he fail to pay that within 90-days he would be disqualified from town council, however Deputy Mayor Brent Feyter doesn’t anticipate that being a problem.
Feyter noted that the next step for the community will be receiving a municipal review, which is expected to come back before summer, “It goes through everything from finances to staffing, to how council meetings are run, so it definitely will be a document the town can use in many different ways, and part of the document will also address the governance issues that we’ve been facing.”
