LETHBRIDGE: A variety of athletes are being recognized with the 2016 Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame inductees.

Nominations were made over three categories: team, athlete and builder.

Hall of Fame Chair Rob Kossuth says those nominated show the strength of sports and athlete in the community.

“One of the things that sticks out for me is the number of really strong candidates that come up that you really aren’t aware of”.

The 1963 Lethbridge Hungaria Soccer Team, AHL Hockey player Howard Yanosik, Lethbridge Pronghorns Soccer player Laura Tsujikawa, Pronghorns Rugby Coach Neil Langevin and Chinook Track and Field Coach Larry Steinke are all being recognized.

Kossuth says it’s easy to get caught up with the success of local teams and athletes while it happens but it is important to look back and celebrate their accomplishments.

“That says something about this community. About the strength of sports in this community and that there is some real gems out there.”

The Hungaria Soccer team won the 1963 Western Canada Soccer League Champions defeating the Regina Concordia in the Molson Cup. They also made the championship game in 1964.

Yanosik played for the Lethbridge Native Sons from 1950-1953. He then went on to play professionally for the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League from 1958-1968 and even won the Calder Cup in 1959.

He was inducted into the Hershey Bears Hall of Fame in 2015 and also coached the Lethbridge Broncos of the Western Hockey League from 1976-1978.

Sujikawa played for the Lethbridge Pronghorns Womens Soccer team where she was named a CIAU (CIS) All-Canadian in 1996 and again playing with U of A in 1998.

She was also a CIAU All-Canadian All Star 1st team selection in 1995 and 1996, CWUAA rookie of the year in 1994, Western Canada Summer Games gold medalist with Team Alberta in 1995 and won Alberta Senior Womens Club Championships in 1993, 1994, 1998, and 1999.

Sujikawa also played junior soccer in Lethbridge with the Chargers.

Langevin coached the Lethbridge Pronghorns Womens Rugby to three straight CIS championships in 1997, 1998, and 1999. He also served as head coach of the Canadian Senior Womens Rugby team at the 2006 Womens Rugby World Cup in Edmonton. Langevin has a distinguished career coaching at the high school and club level in Lethbridge and served as the president of Rugby Alberta in 2003-04.

And Steinke has been the Head coach of the Chinook Track and Field Club since 1995 and is currently the head coach of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. He is a Coaches of Canada Charter Member and has been an Athletics Canada National Event Group Coach. Steinke currently coaches national team members Jim Stacey (Hammer), Elizabeth Glendale (Javelin) and Aaron Hernandez (Triple Jump).

The 2016 Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet will take place April 30th at Enmax Centre.
