‘Out of This World’ Speakers Visit Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE: A pair who pushed themselves to the “outer limits” took the stage at the 2016 Greatness In Leadership conference in Lethbridge Tuesday.

Buzz Aldrin was part of the Apollo 11 mission which was the legendary first walk on the moon in 1969.

Aldrin says he always focused on the planning process especially when it comes to Space.

“That’s what I’ve been doing through innovation. Thinking outside the box. Improving what people do.”

Aldrin was selected by NASA in 1963 and was the first with a doctorate. He became known as “Dr. Rendezvous.” The docking and rendezvous techniques he devised for spacecraft in Earth and lunar orbit became critical to the success of the Gemini and Apollo programs, and are still used today.

He says education of youth is essential to advancing space exploration today.

“Getting young people to stay interested in third, fourth….eighth, ninth grade and beyond.”

Meanwhile, Chris Hadfield is the first Canadian to walk in space and the first Canuck to command the International Space Station.

He says his childhood obsession with Science Fiction turned him into a dreamer but he was lucky because at the same time dreams were becoming a reality.

“I was nine when Buzz and Neil [Armstrong] walked on the moon. For me, that cemented the whole deal. Something that had been impossible become possible on July 20th 1969.”

Hadfield hopes those in attendance can learn from how he challenged himself in high stake situations.

“By pushing yourself to that level you come up with ideas that are applicable across the board [for everyone]. How do you conduct yourself personally? How do you turn yourself from a nine year old dreamer into someone who commands a spaceship.”

Work safe advocate Candace Carnahan and New York Times best-selling author Chester Elton were also speakers at the event today.
