YMCA Supported for Facility Upgrade Grants

LETHBRIDGE – The YMCA of Lethbridge will receive a letter of support from the Mayor’s Office for a number of upgrades.

The organization’s CEO, Jennifer Petracek-Kolb, says membership has been steadily increasing over the last two years, and the current facilities can no longer accomodate the influx.

The building has undergone some recent renovations, including washroom upgrades, a large roof repair, security upgrades and various other aesthetic and plumbing repairs.

The letter of support will go toward provincial and municipal grants, which will be largely used to upgrade and repurpose two of the YMCA’s racquet ball courts, with a price tag of nearly $160,000. Petracek-Kolb says the courts haven’t been renovated since the building opened.

She says the vision is to make one of the courts into additional fitness space, adding a large piece of equipment so many people can use it at once. The other court will be made into a multipurpose sapce for meetings or new office space as the organization continues to grow. The other two that remain will be renovated and kept as squash/racquetball courts.

Further improvements will also be made to the gymnasium floors, the development of an outdoor play area, some exterior building upgrades and drain pipe repairs to fix corrosion.
