Former NHLer and Hurricane Tells Wilson Middle School “Knowledge Is Power”

A former NHLer and Lethbridge Hurricane returned to the Bridge City to speak to students about the importance of literacy.

Jamie McLennan, who spent 11 seasons in the NHL after three campaigns with the Hurricanes, helped Wilson Middle School celebrate the end of their Literary Exploratory course Monday.

“I beleive being well read and well schooled helped me have success in the NHL as well because of my research. I would study a team or read the paper. That’s where, if you are well-versed it helps you with anything you do. It helps with anything.”

The school was given $4,100 hundred dollars for the next three years to encourage and promote reading.

“You’re not the strongest guy on the playground anymore….that’s barbaric to think. Now it’s, in the information age, the most successful people in society are well-read, well-read, who engage people and show respect [and] get that respect back.”

McLennan now writes a column for the Hockey News, is a tv analyst for the NHL Network and TSN, and co-hosts “Leafs Lunch” on TSN radio.

He also wrote the book “The Best Seat In The House” that is about the life of a backup goaltender.
