Dry conditions and gusty wind – standard recipe for grass fires

Oct 15, 2017 | 10:55 PM

LETHBRIDGE –  The dump of snow that blanketed much of southern Alberta two weeks ago offered only a short respite from dry conditions.

With the ground cover gone and several days of gusty wind, it would come as no surprise when residents on the south-east outskirts of the city noted clouds of smoke wafting across their acreages Sunday (Oct 15) afternoon.

Fire crews were called to knock down a grass fire in the fields along Highway 4 just before 4:00-pm.

Crews were able to quickly get the fire under control and remained on scene to check for hot spots. The fire did get close to a home and other buildings. However, there was no immediate word on structure damage or how the fire started.

With double digit temperatures and windy conditions expected to continue all week, residents are reminded to properly extinguish all smoking materials and use care when taking motorized vehicles across dry or stubble filled fields.
