Town of Coaldale approves new asphalt plant/ encourages Alberta Transportation to buy old 7-Eleven property

COALDALE – The Town of Coaldale is giving the green light to a new asphalt batch plant and gravel crushing facility.

At Wednesday’s (Jan. 24) Municipal Planning Commission meeting, the application was approved, along with 27 conditions.

When completed, it will be located at the intersection of 11th street and 11th avenue in the Northeast Industrial Park.

But before a development permit is issued, an environmental impact assessment must be completed and submitted to the town for approval, along with a detailed nuisance mitigation strategy.

Mayor Kim Craig has penned a letter to provincial Transportation Minister Brian Mason, asking his ministry to consider buying a piece of property on 20 Ave.

The commercial property is owned by 7-Eleven, which recently closed its doors for unspecified reasons.

In the letter, Craig explains that the property is a safety hazard for school buses and children, there isn’t enough space for semis to safely enter or exit- resulting in a hazardous situation for pedestrians, and it’s a very high traffic area that is congested throughout the day.

The Mayor says the land would be better suited for future road widening purposes to help reduce congestion.
