LETHBRIDGE – The buzz has started to build for a major international sporting event coming to Lethbridge next spring.

Organizers of the World Mixed Doubles and Seniors Curling Championships are now accepting online signups for volunteers. Co-chair Kirk Mearns says they need roughtly 250 people to commit to helping put on the event.

“Those volunteers are going to range anywhere from hosting countries, officials, ice preparation, security, all sorts of different volunteers to make this event happen,” Mearns said. The event site will be operating between 6 a.m. and midnight for each of the seven days of the event.

He added most volunteers will not need special qualifications. Anyone over the age of 18 is invited to take part.

“Lethbridge is known for having a great turnout of volunteers,” he said. “It always has been. We’ve hosted the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, World Curling Championships, Skate Canada was just here. Lethbridge is a really volunteer-friendly city, so we expect our 250 volunteers will be well represented.”

The event is scheduled for April 22-29 at the new ATB Centre in Lethbridge. Mearns explained the mixed doubles will be staged in the 600-seat arena, while the seniors event will be at the 10-sheet curling club.

It’s the second time Canada will have hosted the combined event. The first was in Fredericton, N.B. in 2013. It’s the last chance for mixed doubles teams to earn qualifying points for its debut as a medal sport at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.
