Special Olympics fundraiser will hear inspirational story of one athlete

LETHBRIDGE — Not everyone likes to run a marathon, or jump into icy cold water.

A brainstorming session led to a new idea for Lethbridge Police members involved in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics to raise money for the cause. The inaugural Black Tie Gala has been scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15.

Cst. Braylon Hyggen says he began supporting Special Olympics as a way to be involved in the community. The movement has the worldwide support of police forces through efforts like the torch run.

“This is something that I got involved with about eight or nine years ago,” he explained. “Helping out with athletes, fundraising for them. It’s just become a passion, I guess.”

Hyggen says his colleague, Insp. Jason Dobirstein had the idea for the gala during a conference in 2016. At this point a dollar goal has not been set.

The evening will include a live and silent auction (for which organizers are now seeking donations), buffet, and music from local singer Trevor Panczak. It will also hear the inspirational story of Special Olympics athlete Brandon Thielen. Born with Down Syndrome, Thielen has been operating his own business for nine years, and takes part in events like five-pin bowling and bocce.

“Everybody in attendance will be able to see what he has done in both his athletic and with his job and his career that he has going on right now,” Hyggen said.
