Regional RCMP detachment project out for tender

COALDALE – The new regional RCMP detachment that will be built in Coaldale has seen the next step in the process taken.

The project has gone out for tender, and Staff Sgt. Glenn Henry says it’s a steady as she goes process.

“The part of the process going on right now is there is a tender for bids out for construction companies to bid on the contract,” Henry continued. “The timeframe will be for 40 days, and I think it started on Jan. 25.”

Once the company is selected and they figure out what they plan to do, Henry says at that point they’ll probably have a sod-turning event at that time, but right now is just another small step in the process.

“We’re probably a couple of months away from knowing who the construction company will be when they’re actually going to start, and what the timeline would be based on what the company says.”

Representatives from the Town of Coaldale have been eager to see work begin on the new detachment.

Chief Administrative Officer Kalen Hastings told LNN in June that the information they’d been given at that time would have the project on track for construction beginning sometime in the spring of 2019, which fits with the timeframe laid out by Henry.

Hastings explained a development permit worth $14 million was taken out by the architectural firm on behalf of the federal government back in March.

The site, which has been purchased by the federal government, is along Highway 3 on the east side of the bedroom community.

“It’ll be great for the community once it’s constructed,” Hastings said at the time. “There’ll be over 50 jobs working out of that building, so it’ll carry huge economic spinoffs for our community.”
