Mother Nature puts a dent in harvesting

Oct 12, 2016 | 4:07 PM

LETHRBIDGE –  Harvesting around Southern Alberta came to a standstill over the long-weekend due to the wet snow blanketing crops that remain in the field. The Alberta government crop report says the harvest was well along early last week ahead of Mother Nature blowing through.

Province-wide harvest was sitting at 69% by October 7th.  However, completion was a bit higher elsewhere

In Southern Alberta, the cereal and oilseeds harvest is nearly complete in most areas, leaving primarily specialty crops to finish up.

Only 11 per cent of the canola crop remains standing, indicating it will likely be straight cut. About 80 per cent of the existing Canola harvest is rated Canada #1.

The crop report noted yield improvements for spring wheat, oats, winter wheat and dry peas. Only durum reported a small decline.

As well, the condition for fall seeded crops declined one point to 87% rated good or excellent.

About 19% of the sugar beet harvest is complete.

It will likely take another week before farmers can get back in their fields to finish harvesting.
