N.L. town warns residents of possible panther sighting roaming roads nearby

DEER LAKE, N.L. — A small community on Newfoundland’s west coast is warning residents to be on the lookout for a possible panther roaming near the town.

The Town of Deer Lake posted a notice on its Facebook page that says two women spotted the large black cat while walking on Glide Brook Road last Sunday.

It described the animal as having rounded ears, a “muscular cat body” and a very long, thick rope-like black curled tail.

The town’s post claims it wasn’t the women’s first encounter.

One of them says she spotted a similar creature while walking on Pynn’s Brook Road in early September.

No pictures have yet surfaced, but comments online report similar unconfirmed sightings in various areas of the island over the past few years.

The town says provincial wildlife officials have been contacted, but that residents should be cautious while walking in areas outside the town.
