Canadian Blood Services puts out call for Blood Donors

Oct 5, 2016 | 10:39 PM

LETHBRIDGE – While blood donations are needed all year, the situation can be particularly stretched on holidays.  Right now, there is a strong need to replenish the national supply, particularly “O” and “A” blood types.

Judy Jones, Canadian Blood Services Associate Director for the Prairies and NWT, says these types of requests for help are usual at this time of year.

“Long weekends are an opportunity when individuals travel and they may not be thinking of it on a regular basis and just keeping it top-of-mind and getting people to book their appointment before they come in to donate is important.”

Jones notes that about 256 new donors are needed every month in the Lethbridge area, to help support patient needs. Right now, there is a strong need to replenish national supplies, particularly type “O” and type “A” blood.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t know your blood type as Canadian Blood Services will ‘type’ your blood and send you a card in the mail for future reference.

If you have never donated and are unsure of the procedure, you simply go to the Canadian Blood services website Blood.ca to read the information and book an appointment.

Jones says new donors provide a great opportunity for people to come in with family and friends and she explained there is a new way to book an appointment, aside from the website or by phone.

“We have a give-blood ‘Ap’ – you can download it, and book your own appointment and, obviously, come to our Lethbridge clinic which is at the Lethbridge Centre.  If you need to change the appointment, you can do that on line”.

Canadian Blood Services in Lethbridge Centre is holding a donor clinic on Thursday (Oct 6th) from 12:30 to 6:30, and again the same time next Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct 11th and 12th).
