EDMONTON – Five City Council members are representing Lethbridge in Edmonton for the 2016 Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) Convention.

Mayor Chris Spearman and Councillors Blaine Hyggen, Jeff Carlson, Liz Iwaskiw and Bridget Mearns are kicking things off at the Shaw Convention Centre on Wednesday (Oct. 5), among more than 1,000 other municipal and provincial officials.

The three-day convention gives communities the chance to gain new tools in tackling economic, environmental and social matters at the local level.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley and Minister of Municipal Affairs, Danielle Larivee, are set to give speeches as part of Government Day on Thursday, October 6. Three dialogue sessions will be held by other key ministers the same day.

Federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Amarjeet Sohi, will provide a federal perspective in his address.

The AUMA convention wraps up on Friday, October 7, with speeches from Alberta’s opposition party leaders, and a special tribute to all those that provided support during the Fort McMurray wildfires.

The AUMA was established in 1905 to create a strong partnership between all municipalities and the three levels of government through a common vision that ensures long-term sustainability.
