Potential leads as police investigate “disturbing” attack

Oct 3, 2016 | 3:35 PM

In terms of disturbing things he’s seen as a police officer, an attack on a 25-year-old woman is high on the list for Lethbridge Police Staff Sgt. Scott Woods.

“It’s very concerning. There are a number of people in the community who are equally concerned as well,” Woods told a news conference Monday, Oct. 3 as he urged people to come forward with information, no matter how seemingly small or insignificant. But Woods says there are some leads that could point them in the right direction.

There hasn’t been much information, though, and Woods admits that adds to the level of concern.

“I think like anybody else, the unknown’s always the most difficult thing to plan for, to prepare for,” he said.

The woman was found along the 2000 block 6th Ave. S. with critical injuries early Friday morning. Her condition is stable, but police have not been able to interview her. Woods said they had not received medical evidence that would indicate whether the victim had been sexually assaulted, but added he probably couldn’t say if they had.

Lethbridge Search and Rescue assisted police on a ground search Friday. Investigators continue to canvass the area. They are also looking at a couple of videos that they hope will contain clues. Woods once again asked anyone who might have a video security system in the neighbourhood to come forward with footage.

Police also want to speak with anyone who might have seen the victim, so they can determine what she was doing, or who she might have spoken with, prior to being attacked. To help, they provided a description of the victim: Caucasian, 5’3″, 110 lbs. with blonde hair. Police are interested in the hour between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30 and the area along 6th Ave. S. between 13th St. and Mayor Magrath Dr.

And people are encouraged to be vigilant about their personal safety, including staying in well-lit areas, travelling with others, and to not use headphones that would block outside sound.
