LETHBRIDGE, AB – A historic building in downtown Lethbridge has been sold.

The J.D. Higinbotham building, known locally as the Canada Post building, has been purchased by the Sumus Property Group. The sale of the site is slated to close later this month.

The structure, located at 704 4th Avenue South, was built over 100 years ago and is a staple of the city, highlighted by a large clock tower.

In a press release, Sumus said they’re excited about taking on the project and the role it will play in Lethbridge’s downtown revitalization.

“This iconic piece of downtown history has a strong opportunity to make a difference in the local culture. Our investment will focus on opening up the building to local innovative users and the community,” the company stated in the release.

Various renovations and improvements are planned for the building, with the company saying those will focus on building “modernization”, local artists installations and improving the usability and accessibility of the space.

Due to the facility holding heritage status, the exterior of the building will remain the same. Canada Post and other government tenants will remain onsite, according to the company.

Sumus’ Kendal Hachkowski said that “the post office has traditionally been a hub and connection point for the community.”

“While times have changed, we aim to bring this vibrancy and community space to an iconic architectural piece of Lethbridge’s downtown.”

Sumus Property Group will announce more details on their renovation plans over the coming months.

The Lethbridge branch of Avison Young Real Estate handled the sale of the building.
