Prince Albert Raiders win WHL championship
PRINCE ALBERT, SK – For the first time in over 30 years, the Prince Albert Raiders are WHL champions.
The team defeated the Vancouver Giants 3-2 in overtime Monday night to claim the top prize in the Western Hockey League. Dante Hannoun played the hero, scoring the winning goal at the 18:25 mark in overtime, his 14th goal of the 2019 WHL playoffs.
The team’s goaltender, Ian Scott, was named the Most Valuable Player of the post-season. Scott is a prospect with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL. The Raiders took a commanding 3-1 early series lead, but the Giants fought back hard to force the winner take all game seven.
The last time the Raiders won a championship was in 1985. Locally, the Lethbridge Hurricanes’ last championship came in 1997.
