Say No to Plastic: Environment Lethbridge marks Environment Week

Jun 3, 2019 | 12:07 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Communities across Canada are celebrating Environment Week.

In Southern Alberta, Environment Lethbridge (EL) is holding a range of activities to mark the occasion.

“Environment Week is a national week that basically celebrates and promotes environmental action across Canada,” said EL’s Executive Director Kathleen Sheppard.

She said Bike to Work Day is Monday, June 3 and there will be a shoreline cleanup hosted by the Helen Schuler Nature Centre, among other activities.

“We’re doing some different workshops between ourselves and some of our different partners around things like zero waste – we’re doing yoga in the park, it’s nature play day on Saturday. We also have a fix-it fair coming up on Saturday, a clothing swap and we’re closing out the week with a workshop on ecological grief.”

Sheppard said Environment Lethbridge has been hosting and coordinating events since 2015.

She noted their main goal is to provide people with opportunities to learn about the environment and the chance to take action.

“We want to give people tools where they can actually do something, challenge themselves for Environment Week. So, one of the other activities that we do have is a Say No to Plastic challenge, where we’re challenging people to give up single-use plastics, whether it’s water bottles or straws or plastic bags throughout the week, just to kind of make that change to celebrate Environment Week.”

Most of the events are either free or by donation, and a full listing of activities can be found at http://environmentlethbridge.ca/environmentweek/.

Environment Week wraps up Sunday, June 9.

Sheppard said Environment Lethbridge’s mission is to inspire people to take action towards sustainability.

“We’re involved in everything from waste reduction to local food to climate and energy, really wanting to provide opportunities for people t connect with the environment and take action.”

Environment Lethbridge has been operating since 2012.
