Irrigation system fails at Legacy Park in north Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE, AB – City crews will be bringing in a temporary irrigation system at Legacy Park in north Lethbridge, after a serious failure in the regular system this spring rendered it completed unable to deliver any water to the grass.

It was just opened to the public about a year ago.

Parks Manager David Ellis says while the grass has turned brown, it’s not dead and can be revived once watering resumes in the 73-acre park.

“We’ve been working on a solution for a little bit. It takes some time to get all of this arranged because it’s essentially building a new delivery system. We’d hoped that June would be a little kinder for us in terms of rainfall and keep the park a little bit greener.”

Ellis says they’re treating it as an emergency, and crews are going as quickly as they can, however it takes time to source the equipment they need, which they expect will be delivered this week.

He adds that there shouldn’t be much of a cost involved.

“It’s kind of a contractual issue so we’re hoping to do this with no cost to the city.”

In the meantime, construction on other areas of the park will continue and it’s just a disappointment that they don’t have the grass ready for play and normal use just yet.
