Exhibition Park finalizing policies for cannabis consumption at Whoop Up Days

LETHBRIDGE, AB – There is only about a month and a half before Lethbridge’s largest annual festival gets underway and organizers are working on a few new key policies.

Namely, the recreational consumption of cannabis was legalized last fall, which has lead to many wondering if it will be allowed on the Whoop Up Days fair grounds.

“We’ll allow for possession on site for sure and we’re still finalizing our policies on consumption,” says Exhibition Park COO Mike Warkentin. “That being said, our standard policy on smoking is that we ask all of our guests who do need to smoke to do it in designated smoking areas.”

Warkentin tells Lethbridge News Now that they are ramping up security at the event in the name of making Whoop Up Days a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for everyone.

Everyone attending the festival will have to pass through a security check.

Anyone with tobacco products will be allowed to have and use it, but will be asked to go to one of several designated smoking areas. These will be marked on a map.

Those with cannabis will be informed of whatever the regulations end up being.

The rules are being developed alongside Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services and the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission.

“We are still working through some of the finer details on these policies, but we appreciate the cooperation of the community and the understanding of the community.”

Warkentin hopes to have their rules around cannabis consumption finalized sometime later in July.

Whoop Up Days runs from August 20th to August 24th. More details on the event here.
