Alberta Government claims it reduced taxes more than any other in a single legislative session

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Government of Alberta is making a powerful statement about the level of tax cuts it has provided Albertans in its first few months in office.

Premier Jason Kenney says the largest part of this came through the passing of Bill 1, An Act to Repeal the Carbon Tax. The UCP administration reports that this is saving the average Albertan family as much as $1,150 per year and the average small business $4,500 each year.

“Our government made a promise to Albertans to take strong action to get our province working again, and that’s been our singular focus during this session,” says Kenney. “I’m very proud of the record tax relief our cabinet has achieved for Albertans and of the promises we’ve followed through on to help get Albertans back to work.”

A week after Bill 1 received provincial approval, however, federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna said Ottawa would impose its own carbon tax on Alberta starting in January 2020.

The other major tax cut under the UCP was for corporations.

Lethbridge News Now previously reported that, as of July 1st, 2019, the corporate tax rate went down from 12% to 11% and will reach just eight percent in 2022.

During the government’s first seven-week session under new management, Kenney claims that 55 commitments from their election platform have either been implemented or are “well underway”.
