Rev your engines for the annual Truck Expo & Job Fair

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Exhibition Park will be filled from trucks, new and old this weekend.

It’s the 5th annual Southern Alberta Truck Expo & Job Fair on Saturday, July 20. The event will give attendees the chance to speak with professional drivers and check out trucks from the past and present.

Trevor Currie of Taber-based Gateway Carriers said it’s amazing to see how much trucks have evolved over the years for professional drivers.

“There’s fridges and bunk beds and (trucks) have Sirius (Satellite) radio. (There are so many) more creature comforts available now than 30 years ago. It is not what people think,” he said.

Currie added the professional driving ‘lifestyle’ has changed a lot as well.

“It’s not 30 years ago where you drove until your eyeballs hung out,” he said.

“The facilities now are getting better. A lot of facilities, especially in the United States, you get to a travel plaza to stop for a night and there’s a gym there, there are walking trails there. It’s not ‘park on the side of the road and go to sleep on a little tiny box with a sleeping bag’ anymore.”

The job fair portion will allow prospective drivers to learn more about the lifestyle and how to obtain their license to hit the road as a pro.

National Hot Rod Diesel Association world record holder Gord Cooper will also be on-site showing off his 1968 Kenworth, known as Smoking Gun. Attendees can also enter to win a ride with Gord.

Entrance to the event is free, but organizers ask that attendees bring a non-perishable food item or cash donation to the Lethbridge Food Bank.

The 5th annual Truck Expo & Job Fair is Saturday, July 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Exhibition Park’s Main Pavilion.
