LETHBRIDGE, AB – Get ready to lace up your sneakers!

The 6th annual Lethbridge Police Service Run is set for October 5, 2019 and the service is encouraging runners to sign up.

The event is a half marathon, 10 kilometre and 5-kilometre trek for runners of all skill levels.

“It’s the only half marathon that the city of Lethbridge hosts,” said Shawn Davis with the LPS’ community resource unit.

“A lot of runners that run it like this course. It’s actually a pretty flat course, even though Lethbridge is kind of hilly – it’s actually a pretty flat course. A lot of people come here and get their personal best, on a half marathon time or even a 10-k or 5-k time.”

The routes offered are on pavement and walking paths. The half marathon flows through the city and connects with the coulees, while the 5 and 10-kilometre runs move throughout the river bottom. Route maps can be seen here.

In addition to being a workout for runners, the event raises funds for Special Olympics Alberta.

“We do a lot of events here in Lethbridge for Special Olympics. We do a bike ride from here to Edmonton annually, we do a polar plunge, half marathon, we’ve had galas in the past where we just try and raise money and just as importantly is the awareness to Special Olympics Alberta,” Davis told LNN.

Participants will receive a t-shirt for race day (must sign up by September 5), a finisher’s medal and prizes will be handed out to the top finishers.

Anyone looking to help out who doesn’t want to run can serve as a volunteer. More details can be found at www.lpsrun.ca.
