LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Canada Foundation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund has provided $90,000 to the University of Lethbridge to help provide essential rat housing infrastructure in the new Science and Academic Building (SAB). Neuroscience professor Dr. Gerlinde Metz with the Canadian Centre for Behaviour Neuroscience (CCBN) says the funds are extremely important.

“When we move to the new SAB, we need upgraded housing systems for our rats. The old system is obsolete and won’t work in the new building. We need top-notch ventilated cages, and this is the latest housing equipment that’s available.”

The new housing will allow the rats more space, access to toys and to climb between two levels. Total cost of the project is $223,000 with additional funds expected from other applications later in the year.

The system will serve the whole department with an emphasis on collaborative research which focuses on the theme of “aging.”

According to the U of L, human conditions can be modelled in lab animals and that helps scientists learn about certain aspects or genetic contributions that lead to disease in a rat or mouse model. Advances in knowledge would not be possible without using the animals in a laboratory setting.
