Two suspicious fires along 9 Avenue North under investigation

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Police and fire crews in Lethbridge are investigating two suspicious house fires.

According to a release from Lethbridge Police Service, the incidents occurred within a two-block radius late Wednesday night, August 21. At around 9:56 p.m., emergency crews responded to a 911 call reporting a house fire along the 900 block of 9 Avenue North.

18 firefighters from three stations attended and flames were extinguished within an hour.

While crews were on scene, a woman approached a police officer and reported that there had been multiple fires inside her own home, two blocks away, that she had put out herself.

Firefighters attended the woman’s home along the 700 block of 9 Avenue North. Crews were on scene for about 30 minutes extinguishing hot spots.

Nobody was injured in either fire. Police and the Fire Prevention Bureau continue to investigate.

According to LPS, damage from the fire along the 900 block of 9 Avenue North is estimated at $50,000 while damage to the residence along the 700 block of 9 Avenue North is estimated at $20,000.

No further details were provided by police, although the LPS said an update will be provided when available.
