Claresholm man charged in officer-involved shooting in Calgary

CALGARY, AB – A man from Claresholm faces multiple charges in connection with an officer-involved shooting in Calgary.

The Calgary Police Service said that on Sunday, Aug. 25 at around 4:05 a.m., officers were called out to a parking lot in a shopping complex in the 200 block of Shawville Boulevard S.E. on a report for an armed suspicious person making threatening statements.

Police contained the affected area and found the man in his 30s who was believed to be armed with a weapon. According to CPS, the situation escalated, and the man was shot by police.

Following the shooting, police say the man disobeyed officers when he was told to drop his weapon. Additional force was used to take the man into custody. He was then transported to the hospital.

35-year-old Daniel Richard Balcerzak of Claresholm is charged with the following:

· Two counts of assaulting a police officer

· Two counts of assault with a weapon

· One count of weapon dangerous to public peace

· One count of uttering threats to cause death

According to CPS, Balcerzak remains in custody in hospital in stable, non-life threatening condition. He’s scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, September 10 2019.
