Lethbridge hosting review meetings for supervised consumption sites this week

Sep 3, 2019 | 1:00 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A committee of eight people will be in Lethbridge this week for two meetings regarding supervised consumption services in Alberta.

The group consists of psychiatrists, addictions and recovery experts, crime reduction specialists, real estate and business leaders, and behavioural scientists.

The scope of the review will include crime rates, needle debris, residential property values, emergency medical services calls, impacts to businesses, data collection, referrals to treatment providers, overdose referrals, and proposals for solutions to address the impacts.

What will not be in the review are the merits of SCS’s as harm reduction tools, the utility of these services in each community, establishing SCS’s outside of the current or proposed sites, provincial funding, and social issues like housing and homelessness.

Both meetings in Lethbridge take place at the Grand Ballroom in the Coast Lethbridge Hotel and Conference Centre.

They run from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Wednesday, September 4th and Thursday, September 5th.

Anyone planning to speak will have to register at the door and will have a maximum of three minutes for their presentation. You can register online here.

If you would like to send a written submission instead, that can be emailed to SCSReview@gov.ab.ca, or you can fill out the on-line survey on the Alberta government website.
