Alberta government will call MLAs back for early return to the legislature

EDMONTON — Alberta MLA’s will soon be headed back to the legislature as the United Conservative government wants to reconvene earlier than planned.

Government house leader Jason Nixon has sent a request to the Speaker to call members of the legislature back starting Oct. 8.

“We promised Albertans during the election that we would work non-stop to pursue our platform commitments to bring jobs back to the province, eliminate red tape, improve public infrastructure and restore the Alberta Advantage. I think I speak for all of our government members when I say that we are excited to get back to the business of fulfilling those promises.”

The fall sitting wasn’t supposed to start until later in October, possibly not until after the federal election on Oct 21.

The government views the spring sitting as having honoured its commitments to Albertans, with more than 68 platform commitments aimed at getting Albertans back to work implemented or are substantially underway, in the first 100 days.

Premier Jason Kenney has indicated a report from a government-appointed panel that looked into the province’s finances would be used as a basis for his government’s first budget, which he had already indicated would be brought down in late October.
