New program available in Lethbridge to help unemployed Albertans find work

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A new government-funded program for unemployed Albertans is now available in Lethbridge to help residents get work in the growing supply chain industry.

Supply chain essentially revolves around the distribution of various goods and services in the community and beyond, and how that distribution is managed. The industry is said to be one of the fastest growing in all of southern Alberta.

The program comes as a result of a partnership between the Teamworks Career Centre, on behalf of the Alberta Ministry of Labour and with the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation (CITT).

Albertans who are eligible can take part in the 15-week program at no cost. They will be able to maintain employment insurance benefits, if applicable, during training.

This week’s announcement on the program also included a team-up wit CITT on a first-of-its-kind Micro-Credential in Transportation and Logistics in Canada.

The Micro-Credential will give graduates a nationally recognized industry certification and a head start towards a professional designation in supply chain.

In a release, CITT President and CEO Pina Melchionna said the Micro-Credential will hopefully help create better awareness on what supply chain actually entails.

“Supply chain logistics as a discipline is seeing a surge in interest as businesses like Amazon and Apple have made it a key competitive differentiator. But the profession of supply chain management is still not well-understood by the general public,” Melchionna said.

“We’re thrilled that this program will provide both an entry into the field for those excited about the career path and a means of educating the public on such a vital component of the business world.”

Courses in the program include Transportation, Logistics, Purchasing and Risk Management, as well as job seeking skills like resume and cover letter writing combined with demo interview sessions.

Potential graduates will receive an Intro to Digital Literacy session from the Dhillon School of Business.

Economic Development Lethbridge (EDL) CEO Trevor Lewington stated in the release that in April of last year, CITT, the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce and EDL hosted an industry roundtable to identify some opportunities in the supply chain industry.

“Through those findings and by partnering with great local and national partners, this first of its kind opportunity is proof that when organizations work together it benefits the community in general, which is exactly what the Lethbridge, Brighter Together community brand represents,” he commented.

Sessions start dates are September 30, January 27 (2020) and March 30 (2020). Anyone seeking further details can contact the Teamworks Career Centre at (403) 382-3770 or find more information at www.teamworktraining.ca.
