Hurricanes pull out of 2-0 deficit to post a 4-2 win over Winterhawks

Oct 4, 2019 | 10:55 PM

LETHBRIDGE — The Winterhawks didn’t waste time during their only visit of the season. Just seconds after the puck dropped to open the game, Portland captain Johnny Ludvig slid it between the pipes, assisted by Robbie Fromm-Delorme and Jake Gricius.

The remainder of the period produced two Hurricane penalties for cross checking, while Portland players sat two minutes for roughing and then hooking, before the first 20-minutes closed with the Winterhawks ahead 1-0.

The second period wasn’t looking good for the Canes. At the seven-minute mark, Nick Cicek planted a short-handed goal for the Hawks, taking the score to 2-0.

However, the tide turned at 12:52, as D-Jay Jerome put the Canes on the board with a shorthanded goal, and cut the Hawks lead to 2-1.

From there, the game opened-up on penalty minutes. Portland’s Seth Jarvis earned himself a ten-minute misconduct for misuse of a ‘mouth guard’, while the Canes’ Chase Wheatcroft sat for holding.

By the time the penalty wound down for Wheatcroft, he hit the ice energized and tied the score on a break-away – his first goal of the season.

Roughing penalty minutes continued to rack up for both teams and with just over 60-seconds left in the frame, Dylan Cozens notched his fifth of the season on a power play, assisted by the two Alex’s – Cotton and Thacker.

The period ended with ten-minute misconduct penalties for the Hawks’ Reece Newkirk and the Canes’ Koletrane Wilson. The Hurricanes were ahead 3-2.

The final 20 minutes offered up a succession of penalty minutes and the final seconds brought an empty-net goal from Zack Stringer, giving the Canes a 4-2 win.

The Hurricanes outshot the Winterhawks 26-20 and the home team racked-up 24 penalty minutes to 38-minutes.

The Canes are 3-2-0-1 on the season and begin a four game eastern road trip in Prince Albert of Friday, Oc. 4.
