Cool weather, then moisture, and now sprouting grain problems

CALGARY –– It’s a double whammy for grain farmers. A cool summer hampered crop development and now, late season moisture is having an impact on grain quality all over western Canada.

The Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions have released information on strategies to help farmers who are trying to contend with sprouting issues, which can impact marketing.

The Harvest Sample Program can help you market your grain.

By participating, you’ll get information about the grade and quality of your crop.

If you are consistently finding that your grain is being rejected based on poor “falling number”, there are some management and genetic decisions you can make to avoid the conditions that cause sprouting.
